Tinker — это лудильщик. А что такое cuss ? Это, вероятнее всего, искажённое среднеанглийское kerse — что-либо пустяковое, не имеющее значения. A tinker's cuss встречается в выражении not to give a tinker's cuss — совершенно не интересоваться, наплевать, наплевательски относиться, ни в грош не ставить. Поэтому если cuss = curse (ругательство), то возможно, что лудильщики имели привычку сквернословить так часто, что одно ругательство для них ничего не значило.
